New Video on Forest Preserve District Web Site

A new video, Path to the Future, is now available for viewing on the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District web site at www.wcfpd.org. The 12-minute video provides an overview in words and photos of WCFPD's history, current facilities and services, and future challenges. It was created to inform the public and prospective candidates for the forest preserve district's new Board of Commissioners.

WCFPD will have an historic election this fall. For the first time in its 88-year history, the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District has the opportunity to be governed by an independent Board of Commissioners elected at large by the voters on November 2, 2010. Seven nonpartisan Commissioners will serve staggered volunteer terms to oversee the Winnebago County Forest Preserve system. This new governing body has an unprecedented opportunity to shape the health of the environment and the quality of life in our region.

Path to the Future is designed to help candidates and the public understand the valuable benefits that Winnebago County Forest Preserve District provides for natural and human communities.

Midtown Farmers Market

Today kicks off the Midtown Farmer's Market, 3-7 p.m. across from Nicholson Hardware on 2nd Ave.  After going out to several of the Open Fields farms this weekend, and buying some nice lettuce and radishes, we're ready to chow down on some locally grown produce. Way over near Cedarville, IL is the new vineyard & winery, Famous Fossil. We were impressed with their organic wine samples, the tour, and the facilities. Their building is built with highly insulated SIPS panels and triple pane windows - dramatically reducing their energy needs. They're just a mile east of Cedarville on Cedarville Road. Pay no attention to the address - which is 395 W. Cedarville Road. We got lost trying to use Google maps to find it. A nice place to hang out in the country. Their website is: www.famousfossilwinery.com We enjoyed and would endorse all the farms we visited as well. Support your local market. Become a vegetarian - it is good for you, and great for the environment. If you must eat meat, eat locally raised - organic & cruelty free products.

The Future of Wind Power

Green Communities Coalition is hosting a free public forum “The Future of Wind Power”.

LOCATION:  Just Goods, 201 Seventh Street, Rockford, IL 61104

The public is invited to attend a panel discussion on the costs and benefits of “big wind.” Local experts will give short presentations on potential economic and environmental impacts of a major wind turbine installation in Winnebago County.

Presenters will be Keith Blackmore, retired professor and sustainability consultant; Dr. Robert Vogl, President Illinois Renewable Energy Association; and Andrew Evans, Project Developer for Navitas, Inc.

A question and answer session will follow expert’s presentations. Refreshments will be served. Free!

Energy-efficiency tips to save energy can help winter home energy costs, and perhaps even provide some gift ideas!

  • Be on the cutting edge with light-emitting diode, or LED holiday lights. Each bulb with this new technology uses only 0.04 watts and is up to 90 percent more efficient than its incandescent counterpart. These newer bulbs are sturdy, last up to 100,000 hours, or 20 years, and barely warm up, eliminating fire concerns.

Informational Meeting on Household Carbon Reduction

The Green Communities Coalition will host a public informational meeting introducing an educational program, The Low Carbon Diet, aimed at helping households improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. The meeting will be on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 6:30PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church on 920 Third Avenue in Rockford. Free, all are welcome.
