Kishwaukee River Defense Alert

thumbs-upWe are making a difference! Through our cooperation with the City of Rockford, Winnebago County, Winnebago County Forest Preserve District, Rockford Park District, Natural Land Institute, Severson Dells, Kishwaukee Homeowners Association, Four Rivers Environmental Coalition, Neighborhood Environment and Traffic Safety, Winnebago County Concerned Citizens for Controlled Growth, Illinois Renewable Energy Association, Save the Kishwaukee River Committee, The Rock River Times and canoe clubs throughout the state - we have aided a historic environmental achievement.

Last night at the Rockford City Council meeting, a resolution was passed unanimously wherein the city would remove approximately 1,400 acres requested for industrial designation from the county's 2030 plan, and agreed to modify the city's 2020 plan to reflect that area in the Kishwaukee River area as agricultural and green space. The resolution also called on any new residential, commercial, or industrial development to meet "Conservation Design" standards and to have sewer and water.

This is a big win.  But the county is still lingering. Last week the zoning committee did not get to the 2030 plan, and is to be discussing the subject again this Wednesday night (4/1).  Last week the room was packed. We need to pack it again. It is not a hearing, you can't talk, but our presence lends strength to those who support our views and maybe give pause to those who don't. Save the Kishwaukee bumper sticker and button to wear will be available for visibility.

If you are able and inclined, attend the County Zoning Committee meeting Wednesday eve @ 5:30, 404 Elm Street, Room 303 (that's just west of the Metro Center).

Continue to contact your county officials to press for the ideals expressed in the city's resolution.

We need to keep the pressure on while we have momentum.
